Welcome to Year 1!

Our topic in Year 1 this term is ‘Pop Up’ which has a design and technology focus. It teaches the children how to make cards and books using simple mechanisms, using a range of different materials. At the heart of this project the children will learn how to write and retell traditional tales.

The children started their learning in Literacy by looking at the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. They used Pie Corbett to retell the story and make story maps. Through their activities they have learned to solve a crime scene, write a police report, make wanted posters, write a recipe for porridge and a letter from Goldilocks to the Bears. They have also used their design and technology skills to make moving characters from the story. Over the coming weeks the children will continue with learning activities based around Goldilocks and the Three Bears and other Traditional Tales.

In Numeracy the children have used the Goldilocks story to measure in non-standard measures by measuring the bears clothes, the bears’ route around the woods and comparing the number of steps each bear took, related to their size. The children have also been learning about place value by representing objects and numbers, counting forwards and backwards, comparing objects and numbers, learning < > =, learning to use a number line and ordinal numbers. The children also practise counting in 2s, 5s, 10s daily.

In RE, we have been studying our panel “The Gospel” as part of The Big Frieze. We have recreated the panel by each drawing a section and talked about what the pictures might mean. We found lots of Bible stories hidden within the panel and have been learning about some of them. After reading “Feeding the 5000”, we made our own baskets of fish and bread, played a board game to collect fish and bread and ordered the story. We will now be looking at The story of The Prodigal Son and how God represents a parent’s love. For our Harvest celebration, the children wrote Harvest prayers and learned and performed a Harvest song. This term we will be learning about Diwali and Christmas.

In Welsh, we have practised a variety of sentence patterns centred around colours and numbers. The children have built their confidence in asking and answering questions, recording responses and interpreting them on a graph using ICT, reading stories and playing games.

This term the children have been on their first trip in Year 1 to St. Fagans Museum of Welsh Life. We looked at Homes and Toys from the past. They are also looking forward to the next trip which is a trip to the theatre to see The Elves and The Shoemaker. The children are also busy learning their parts and singing songs to participate in ‘Lights! Camel! Action!’, the Nativity play they will be performing with Year 2.
