Reception

Croeso i ddosbarth Derbyn, Welcome to Reception!

I am delighted to say that the children have settled into Reception life extremely well.

Our topic for this term is Hapus, Iachus Fi – Happy, Healthy Me. It is a great topic to start the school year with as it gives the children an opportunity to discuss themselves and their families as well as the importance of keeping ourselves happy and healthy.

In Numeracy and Mathematics the children will be following the White Rose Maths scheme of work. They will be learning to match and sort objects and to understand that objects can be sorted in different ways. They will also be learning to compare amounts, size, mass and capacity as well as making simple patterns. The children will be learning to represent and compare numbers 1, 2 and 3 as well as understanding that all numbers are made up of smaller numbers – composition.

In Languages, Literacy and Communication we will provide the children with lots of opportunities in developing their Oracy skills such as expressing their likes and dislikes, talking about themselves and why they are special. We will be using the Role Play Area as a Doctor’s Surgery to encourage communication and language skills.

The children will be learning their Phase 2 and 3 sounds on a daily basis and will be provided with opportunities to mark make or write in response to a variety of stimuli on subjects that are of interest to them as well as beginning to produce pieces of emergent writing.

In Welsh we have been learning lots of Welsh words and phrases and the children enjoyed performing the Welsh songs ‘Dail Y Coed’ and ‘Dyma Bwgan Brain’.

The children take part in our daily Welly Walks around the school field and have particularly enjoyed learning in the outdoors by building dens for woodland animals and learning all about trees, leaves and flowers.

This term our value is ‘Wisdom’. We will be discussing times when we have shown wisdom and making the right choices even when it may be tricky to do so.

We are looking forward to our trip to the Sherman Theatre on Monday December 6th to see The Elves and the Shoemaker as well as our Christmas Concert on Tuesday December 7th.
